Just going to be brutally honest, the tab search is terrible in its current state

While I'm grateful for you guys thinking about those of us with countless tabs to sift through, in its current state the 'Search tabs' feature is pretty terrible. I'm going to be brutally honest about this and I'm hard on you guys not to put you down but because I know you guys can do better than this, I believe in you guys and wholeheartedly support you all working on Firefox but this is ridiculous what I'm seeing, I don't know if people are being lazy or what but this is pathetic. I

It's extremely frustrating when you need something like this tab search feature the most it fails spectacularly and that's when you realize how poorly thought out and mostly useless it is.

Take for example today, I'm looking for some Reddit tabs I opened last week and was reading through. I put that to the side, on pause to work in some other tabs, new tabs were opened, life is happening, busy life, today I need to reference back to those Reddit tabs from a week ago, I'm not able to immediately locate those tabs so I figure now is a perfect time to put this 'Search tabs' feature to use, this is what it's for right?

I do a tab search for 'Reddit' and what do I get? Nothing but 10 Reddit tabs when I actually have far more than what's shown in the search results which I can clearly see if I do a quick skim of the vertical tabs, another recent new addition funny enough, I can clearly see that all of the Reddit tabs aren't even being displayed in the search results.

It's even worse if you watch a lot of videos. You like to browse YouTube? TikTok? You have a bunch of new interesting videos in other tabs that you planned to watch later? Well the tab search is ONLY going to show you 10 of them!

This is just infuriating....it's a major letdown from you guys that you implement something that has so much potential, that a lot of people could really use to make their lives easier then we immediately discover how useless it actually it is and how little thought has been put into it. And its been like this for several months now, likely over a year or few years now, however long this has been a feature, its remained the same.

Maybe you chose to limit it to 10 search results to reduce clutter - well at least add a dropdown arrow TO GIVE US THE OPTION to view more search results, not just only show us 10 results and hide the rest from us and leave us on the dark like what we're actually looking for doesn't matter. Add a tab search sidebar to display ALL of the relevant results not just 10 of them...SOMETHING that actually displays all of results not just the first 10...this is ridiculous, you guys are college graduates and not thinking about these things.

What good is a tab search feature that only returns useless results? Only the first 10 results???

Try searching tabs from firefox view's open tabs. If you prefer something supercharged you can also use extension like tab manager plus.

This is definitely what I was hoping and expecting for this 'Search tabs' feature to accomplish and it is a good workaround thank you. This 'search tabs' option in the 'List all tabs' menu is all but useless.

But a bit of a downside to firefox view that I'm seeing is it forces me to look at a whole other page when I would rather just stay on the page I'm on, jump to whatever tab I might need to check or reference back to, then go back to the original tab immediately. But at least firefox view doesn't send me to the far right or far left tab just to search through the tabs, that's something I do like, I'll try to get used to this while they work on improving the 'tab search' in the 'list all tabs' menu, if they ever do.

Did you know that you can quickly refine your search by adding additional terms? For example, I just discovered that, among my numerous reddit tabs, two are in the same sub. I don't even need to completely type the terms since the pattern matching is very simple.

I often have several hundred tabs and my only complaints about the search function are:

  • I would like a keyboard shortcut to pop up the search bar with Tabs temporarily selected as the "search engine".
  • I don't like that the "List all tabs" chevron lives on the right hand end of the tab bar but the tab search function necessarily pops up in the search bar. This means I have to move my mouse first to the upper right to select Search Tabs and then shift it left to the search bar. The alternative is to change the search bar's engine to "Tabs" but I find that kinda clunky and the change is persistent so I have to revert to my regular search engine for conventional searches. The keyboard shortcut would eliminate this extra step but it would be nice if I could have a dedicated "Search tabs" button to the left end of the search bar.

I'm aware that I can add additional terms to a search....I think even a child would know that, don't insult my intelligence. That isn't the issue, adding additional terms is useless for me with how many tabs I have open.

You should actually read the topic in it's entirety and understand the issue before you respond and speak to people in this condescending tone as if you're smarter than everyone when you're suggesting something that is common sense and shouldn't be necessary regardless.

And oftentimes users may not even be able to remember the full name of the specific tab they need to go back to. Who is really memorizing the names of each and every one of their open browser tabs? Little to no one, so whatever 'additional terms' is unrealistic and shouldn't be required, searching 'Reddit' should be enough, it should display all of the open Reddit tabs period, not just the first 10.

Anyway I'll just be using Firefox View for the foreseeable future, I doubt they'll ever address these issues with this 'List all tabs' menu seeing how it's been like this for so long.

wow, nice hostile reply. Who peed in your porridge?! I guess your username reflects your dark and unpleasant life.

Sorry I took the time to try to help.
